Check out this inspiring video in which Elizabeth Gilbert, the best selling author of Eat Pray Love, shares her insights on the creative process and as I was watching this I was inspired to add the following to this interesting creative conversation.
How do you assess the level of your creative success?
Dare to redefine success for yourself for your own creative process. Only you can set your own standards by which you can measure your experience of success.
For me success is the experience of
- A new idea that comes to me and I immediately know that this idea is going to change everything, and it does
- Bliss for no reason
- Inspiring someone to live their passions and dreams
- Feeling like you had a breakthrough
- An instant life upgrade just by living the new idea
- Empowering women to succeed
- Moving someone, or being moved by someone, to profound tears of recognition
- Finding a kindred soul and sharing a moment that changes us both
We each have our own creative process. The secret to success is honoring our own unique process and experience of creativity, of letting ourselves be inspired in many different forms and expressions, and not limiting our process - this is success.
When we honor our creative process it has its way of honoring us: it takes us to new levels, it inspires us to be more than we ever imagined we could be. Our creativity even surprises us, if we let it.
Observe the wonders as they occur around you. Don't claim them. Feel the artistry moving through and be silent.
Its so easy to get caught up in one particular notion, or experience, even, of success; the real challenge is to choose what success is for you and actively participate in it.
To gain some clarity, consider these questions & jot down your responses:
What is success to you right now?
When was the last time you felt successful?
Did others share this experience with you, or was this a very personal, private experience?
Did you acknowledge your success, or did you try to downplay it?
Can you think of new ways to experience success?
How do you honor and celebrate your unique creative process?
I love this quote by author Christopher Morley:
There is only one success...to be able to spend your life in your own way.
